Our Saunas

Make it hot

saunas inspired by Finnish design: simple, clean, functional.

Traditional Finnish saunas work by heating thermal mass — lots of rocks — These rocks then heat the sauna, creating a zone of hot, dry air near the ceiling called the löyly zone. We build our saunas combining the long history of Finnish design, modern technology, and building science to create a space that will serve you for years. Whether its a simple one-person retreat or a family-sized gathering space, we can help you make it happen.

FAQs

  • Finnish-style saunas rely on heated mass---rocks---to create a hot, dry room. Finnish-saunas were traditionally heated by a smokey fire, but today's saunas are heated with high-efficiency wood stoves or electric heaters. Finnish saunas are also taller than most American-designed saunas, utilizing the löyly zone more efficiently.

  • Both wood stoves and electric stoves have the same goal: to heat the sauna through an intermediary thermal mass---rocks. A well designed heater relies not on the heat source to create the familiar sauna heat, but the rocks. In this way, whether heating with wood or electric, there is little difference in the sauna experience. Wood stoves offer a traditional experience, and with some heaters which have glass fronts, a rustic ambiance. Electric heaters are more convenient and great if you want fast, consistent heat-ups. The big difference comes down to your preference as the both perform well. We don't use infrared heaters in our saunas. Most Finns would agree, infrared heaters do not create the same convective heat as rocks.

  • A custom sauna is designed with fution, form, and performance in mind. Our saunas are custom made to fit your needs. They are designed to fit your space, whether it's a basement bathroom or a outdoor retreat. Most prefabricated saunas don't conform to the guidelines of Finnish saunas. Their ceilings and benches are too low to capture the löyly heat needed for a positive sauna experience. By designing and building a custom sauna, you not only get complete control over the design and aesthetic, you also get a high performing space, which leads to a better, more rewarding sauna experience.

  • This is a by far the most frequent question we get asked! There is no set price for custom saunas because they are custom. Each built provides its own set of challenges which might affect cost. How big will the sauna be? What materials will be used? What type of heater will be installed? How difficult is it to get to the site? Is there ample electrical service to supply power to the heater? These are just a few of the questions which need to be answered to give you a price. Your best bet is to reach out and talk to us. We can walk you through the process of our build and get some information about your site and ideal uses of the space. It's free to chat so reach out with any questions you have!
